It’s pretty bad when Rush Limbaugh understands the left better than writers at Salon.com. Unfortunately, it’s true. This article mostly quotes Limbaugh without comment, as if what he’s saying is self-evidently ridiculous:
“I do believe that the left wants to cause great damage to the NFL,” he continued. “What does the NFL stand for? Masculinity, strength, toughness. So, what are they doing to it?”
Limbaugh then bashed college campuses and said “you’ll find classes on how to take masculinity out of men.”
“It’s actually happening. There are studies and courses in college that do this. It’s patriotic, you’ve got the flag, you’ve got the anthem, you’ve got uniformed military personnel, all the things that the left wants to erase from this country,” he added.
Limbaugh said that the left is using NFL players to destroy the league because “they don’t like displays of patriotism, strength, rugged individualism.” He continued, “they think it’s about police brutality, they think it’s about righting social wrongs, and so forth. This is an attack on the NFL as an institution for shaking it down and lowering its profile and impact on American culture. We’re in the midst of a culture war. Everybody knows it.”
The best Salon has got is to end on something petty: lol Rush Limbaugh denies global warming and evacuated before a hurricane.
Giving credit where it’s due, Limbaugh accurately summarized my position on the matter. He’s at least aware of things radical leftists say about gender. Charlie May at Salon seems unaware that these things have even been questioned. “Come on, the left wants to destroy masculinity? Preposterous!” Actually, yes. The liberal is even more hopeless than the far right, because the far right knows what they’re doing is fucked up, and that they’ve been called on it. The liberal is blissfully unaware, because football and traditional gender roles are The Way Things Are.
Have liberals not gotten the memo that we’re having a culture war? How can you possibly oppose anything the right wing is doing and simultaneously enjoy watching ESPN?
